A Night of Mystery & Magic: Tarot Readings at the Opera

Last night, I had the honor of bringing Tarot’s timeless wisdom to the opening of Bluebeard’s Castle at Opera San José. It was a part of a special community night.

It was my second time working with San Jose Opera in the beautiful California Theater in the heart of San Jose downtown, I was also entertaining the guests at the premiere of The Magic Flute in September 2024.


Unlike the usual grand opera premieres, this evening was more intimate, more immersive—a night of storytelling, exploration, and mystery. And what better way to complement Bartók’s dark, psychological masterpiece than with Tarot—the very tool designed to reveal hidden truths, uncover secrets, and face what lies behind closed doors?



Why Tarot and Bluebeard’s Castle Are a Perfect Match

The entire opera revolves around one central question:"What happens when we open doors we were never meant to?" To underline the symbolism of doors and secrets I added a bunch of medieval keys and candles.



Bluebeard’s Castle is a chilling tale of curiosity, love, and fear. As Judith, Bluebeard’s new wife, insists on unlocking door after door in his ominous castle, she slowly uncovers the truth about her husband’s past—one that he hoped would remain hidden.


And isn’t this exactly what Tarot does?


Each card we pull is a door to the subconscious. Some doors reveal opportunities, others expose fears we try to ignore, and some force us to ask: Am I ready to see what’s on the other side?


Throughout the evening, guests sat at my table and chose their own metaphorical doors to open. Using custom Tarot spreads inspired by Bluebeard’s Castle, we explored:

🔹 Which keys do you already hold to change your fate?

For some, the readings mirrored personal dilemmas—facing an uncertain career path, a relationship at a crossroads, or a past they were struggling to leave behind. For others, it was simply an invitation to experience the thrill of the unknown—to step into the story and let the cards whisper their own version of the tale.

What made this event so special wasn’t just the readings themselves, but how deeply they resonated in the context of the opera. Just like Judith in Bluebeard’s Castle, we all have doors we hesitate to open. Tarot doesn’t just predict the future—it helps us ask the right questions, find clarity, and navigate the shadows with confidence.


As guests left my table, some were deep in thought, others smiled knowingly, and a few admitted, “I wasn’t expecting this to feel so real.” And that’s the magic of Tarot—it transforms from entertainment into something profound and personal in just a few cards.
